Custom Plastic Molding Overview
Molding (sometimes referred to as moulding in some areas of the world) has been around for ages, having seen a remarkable transformation thanks to evolving scientific and technological innovations. Custom molds can be created primarily via electrical discharge machining (EDM) also known as spark erosion or by means of traditional machining methods. Scientific or decoupled molding has replaced single pressure molding techniques of the to create cycle to cycle or shot-to-shot consistency. In general, the fewer number of cavities, the lower the initial manufacturing costs however detailing intricacy and tolerance requirements among other factors all impact cost as well. As expert mold makers, we provide both the design, manufacturing, and quality to create the right output, all backed by our experience. Equipment & Infrastructure
Our custom molding department has several presses ranging in size from 660 metric tons down to 25 tons. In fact, The Toolroom has over 2,890 metric tons of molding equipment servicing customer requirements. We’ve even added a robot to our 610 Toshiba for increased efficiency and automation, providing businesses seeking a St Louis plastic injection molding company with even more value!

Flexible Small or Large St Louis Plastic Injection Molding Runs
Need very small or very large sized mold runs? Our elastic demand approach enables you to take advantage of flexible options with short runs, production runs, and dual shot runs. While our molding department serves as an off-shoot of our molding shop, it also as a stand-alone operation giving us an added benefit of being a flexible custom molder.

Custom Molding Finishing Services
Once your custom rubber or plastic part has been created in the molding stage, the next step, depending on how your part needs to be formed, could be trim-die-punching.  In this stage, a trimming die cuts away excess or irregular pieces of the part that was molded. A die is a metal block used for forming materials such as plastic or rubber. Punching can stretch, bend or blank (cut) the part.

In addition to the above molding services, The Toolroom also offers these services in joining parts, labeling parts, and packaging parts:

  • Sonic welding: Sonic welding, or ultrasonic welding, is a welding process that welds two parts together, usually two plastic parts to each other or a plastic part to a part of another type of material. Sonic welding uses a motion like a jackhammer to weld two parts together at such a high speed that it causes enough friction to cause heat between the parts, which in essence melts them together. Sonic welding vibrates at ultrasonic frequencies, which are above any frequency the human ear can hear, which is where it gets its name. Ultrasonic welding is great for welding small parts.
  • Heat staking: Heat staking requires one part in a join to be made of plastic and the other part to be made of another material, such as metal. The plastic part is melted and essentially pressed into the other part to create the attachment. This method of joining materials is useful if you want to avoid using vibration, and it also eliminates the need for a mechanical fastener, creating a stronger bond between the two joined parts.
  • Hot stamping: Hot stamping, also known as heat stamping, is a common method for applying an image and engraving to a product. This is another form of labeling that is more permanent than a traditional label. In addition, if you choose to have your products hot stamped, the engraving that is left behind outlasts any of the colored dye that might wear away over time. Hot stamping involves pressing dry ink down on a product using foil to guide where the ink should be applied. It is also a method that produces no pollution.
  • Product packaging: Once your products are created, we also can provide services to individually package your product. Packaging can protect your product during transport, label it, and lets consumers know what it is and what it does. Our product packaging services are convenient because you don’t have to find another supplier to provide you with packaging, and your products are ready to be sold on shelves once they leave our shop.
  • Secondary assembly: Even if your products are packaged individually, you may want them grouped together in a larger quantity, for ease of shipping and protection. We can shrink-wrap large quantities of your product, put them in cartons, label them, bundle them in display boxes, and more. This step, much like product packaging, allows you the ease of using the same supplier for all your packaging needs.
